Residential Metal Roofing
A metal roof is the one residential system likely to outlive the person who bought it. Where architectural asphalt is rated for twenty to thirty years, a properly installed standing-seam roof runs forty to seventy. In a climate that cycles through freeze, thaw and heavy snow load every year, that difference is not marginal.
Metal also sheds snow rather than holding it, which reduces the ice damming behind so much winter water damage in older homes. It costs more up front than asphalt, and we would rather say so plainly here than have you discover it at the estimate.

Standing seam or exposed fastener?
Standing seam hides its fasteners under the raised seam, so nothing holding the roof down is exposed to weather or UV. It is what we recommend for houses. Exposed-fastener panel is cheaper and faster to install, but its gaskets are the weak point and they need attention every decade or so.
For a garage, barn or workshop, exposed fastener is a sensible economy. For the roof over your living space, it usually is not.
Metal roofing and solar
Standing-seam metal is the best residential roof surface to put solar on, because the array clamps directly onto the seams. There are no holes through the roof plane at all, which removes the most common source of leaks on a solar installation.
It also means the roof underneath will comfortably outlast the panels, so you are not facing a tear-off and re-mount partway through the life of the array.
Questions about residential metal roofing
Not on a house. The noise people remember comes from metal over open framing in a barn. Over solid decking, underlayment and attic insulation, a metal roof is no louder inside than asphalt.
Up front, yes, usually significantly. Measured across the life of the roof it generally comes out ahead, because one metal roof replaces two or three runs of asphalt. Whether that maths works for you depends on how long you plan to stay.
Sometimes, over a single layer and with furring, but we usually advise against it. Covering the deck means nobody inspects the sheathing, and on a roof meant to last fifty years that is a poor trade.
