Siding Replacement Services
A siding replacement is the one opportunity in the life of a house to see the walls. Once the old siding is off, the sheathing, the weather barrier, the flashing around every window and the condition of the trim are all visible and all fixable, at a fraction of what any of it would cost to address later.
That is why we tear off rather than side over. Installing new siding on top of old hides everything that might be wrong, adds a layer that traps moisture, and makes the flashing details at windows and doors considerably harder to get right.
What a replacement includes
- Full tear-off and disposal of the existing siding
- Sheathing inspection with damaged sections replaced
- New weather-resistant barrier, correctly lapped
- New flashing at every window, door and penetration
- Optional exterior insulation while the wall is open
Why we do not side over
Siding over existing siding is faster and cheaper on the day, and it is a genuinely bad idea on most houses. It buries any rot that has started, it can trap moisture between the layers, and it pushes the new siding out past the existing window and door trim, which is where the flashing details then get compromised.
If someone has quoted you meaningfully less on that basis, it is worth asking what happens to the sheathing they will never see.
Insulation and air sealing while the wall is open
With the siding off, adding continuous exterior insulation is straightforward and considerably cheaper than at any other time. It reduces thermal bridging through the studs in a way that filling the cavity alone cannot, and it is the single most effective comfort upgrade available during a siding job.
The same goes for air sealing around window and door openings. Both are quoted as options rather than assumed, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.
Questions about siding replacement services
Sometimes it physically can, and we generally advise against it. It hides rot, complicates flashing at openings and can trap moisture between layers.
One to two weeks for a typical house, longer for larger homes or heavy trim detail. Weather and whatever we find behind the old siding are the two variables.
Siding alone will help a little. Air sealing and exterior insulation during the job will help a great deal, which is why we quote them as options while the wall is open.
