Straight-line winds crossed Iowa at speeds over a hundred miles an hour, and roofs that had handled decades of ordinary weather came off in minutes.
That event reframed how we look at roofs here. Wind resistance in Iowa is not a coastal concern to be borrowed from somewhere else; it is a plains concern, and the failure mode is uplift at edges and corners exactly as it is on a hurricane coast.
