Commercial & Residential Roofing Services in Washington

Persistent rain, moss and moisture management, which is a very different problem from snow or hail.

Roofing in Washington

Western Washington gives roofs a problem almost nobody else has: not violent weather, but relentless moisture. Months of light, persistent rain and low sun keep roofs damp for long stretches, and damp roofs grow moss.

East of the Cascades the picture flips to a drier climate with real winter cold and much higher UV, which is one of the reasons a statewide roofing default makes so little sense here.

What matters on a Washington roof

  • Moss management that does not strip granules off the shingles
  • Ventilation and moisture control in a persistently damp climate
  • Drainage kept genuinely clear through the wet season
  • Different specification east of the Cascades

Moss is a structural problem, eventually

Moss is not merely untidy. It holds water against the roof surface indefinitely, lifts shingle edges as it grows underneath them, and blocks the drainage path so water backs up where it was never meant to sit. On a north-facing slope under trees it can take years off a roof.

The answer is a combination of keeping the roof clear, managing overhanging growth, and where appropriate zinc or copper strips near the ridge, which release trace metal ions in rain that inhibit regrowth. What does not work is aggressive pressure washing, which removes granules along with the moss.

Roofing questions in Washington

Please do not. High-pressure washing takes the granule layer off with the moss and ages the roof faster than the moss was doing. Gentle treatment and prevention are the durable approach.

They help. Rain washing over zinc or copper carries trace ions down the slope that inhibit regrowth. They work best as prevention after a roof has been cleaned, rather than as a cure for heavy existing growth.
